There are lots of interesting definitions of socialism—although you won’t find any of them in Steven Erlanger’s article.
Last night, during a concert in Burlington, Vermont, Billy Bragg offered a useful definition: “Socialism is collective compassion.”
Bragg then proceeded to explain to the audience that he’s a socialist, and that socialism involves free healthcare and education, affordable housing, and decent pensions for all workers. A socialism that doesn’t include at least those four items is not, in his view, worthy of the name.
I felt rather outraged by Erlanger, so I wrote this:
“What is a Socialist? I am”.
