Only in America

Only in America is someone allowed to say with a straight face that coal mining is a cherished “way of life.” And only in America does that same person—a coal-industry executive—get to pretend he’s a miner, complete with bib overalls and a hard hat.

Heath Lovell is vice president of River View Coal, not a miner. Over the past two years, he and his wife have donated $21,400 to candidates for federal office, including to Mitt Romney and Rand Paul.

Sorry, Prof. but that’s not only in the US. Here in Oz we do the same and even better.

The guy in the photo linked to below (Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest) is not just any crappy vice-president: he’s the biggest wig, the great chieftain and top honcho at Fortescue Metals Group and until recently the richest man in the land.

When the photo in the link was taken he had already taken his hard hat off and gotten off the truck, where he and Gina Rinehart (together worth more than many Third World countries GDP) had been directing, loudspeaker in hand, a billionaire’s “popular” protest rally against a mining tax.

Their toadies were chanting “ditch the witch” and “ditch the bitch” to our female PM, while female opposition MPs, who were also present, remained in silence, perhaps a tad embarrassed, but supportive and understanding of their just anger.

The only thing I don’t know is whether they were chanting “the rich, united, will never be defeated”. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they did, though.
