The New York Times refers to Austan Goolsbee, the next chair of Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors, as “left of center.” Really? In what alternative world can be Goolsbee be considered left of center? In the same article, the Times describes Goolsbee as having “a free-market bent.”

OK, so which is it?

Goolsbee has, in fact, debunked [pdf] the nonsense behind the Laffer Curve. But there’s nothing in his research or policy positions that puts him on the Left.

Only, I suppose, if you place Timothy Geithner and Larry Summers in the center. And what a strange parallel universe that would be!
